  • People

    Employee Health, Safety and Welfare

    Teradyne is committed to protecting the environment and controlling environmental, health and safety risks through the implementation of our Environmental and Safety Management Systems (ESMS). Our Environmental System is registered to the international management system standard ISO 14001 for our Corporate Headquarters located in North Reading, Massachusetts and our larger facilities located in Kumamoto, Japan and Costa Rica. A key element of our system is “verifying” performance. We conduct internal compliance audits of our facilities and major operations are audited routinely.

    The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) group at Teradyne uses various self-assessment tools to regularly evaluate the status of our programs.

    EHS Training
    Teradyne is committed in ensuring workers are provided with the knowledge to perform their jobs safely. We provide:

    • Consistent training programs worldwide
    • Quality in content and delivery
    • Innovative and efficient delivery methods and options
    • Support of new business initiatives such as external EHS training

    All employees receive basic Environmental, Health and Safety awareness training which covers a variety of topics applicable to anyone working at our facilities. Our operations and engineering employees may also take additional courses related to their job function. In addition, contractors coming on site are required to go through Teradyne Contractor Safety Training prior to doing work at any Teradyne site. 

    Ergonomics Program
    Similar to other companies, Teradyne monitors and tracks common safety metrics such as accidents and injuries. However, we strive to do more; we want a workplace that works for our employees. As employees spend more and more time at work it is increasingly important to provide them with workplaces that are both flexible and adjustable. This includes looking at ergonomics issues in the workplace, educating employees to self-identify risks and ensuring they have the setup they need to do their jobs effectively.

    Global Employee Survey
    To sustain high performance, organizations must stay healthy, vital and agile by continuously building their capacity to learn and change over time. In healthy companies, employees know where the organization is headed; understand how they fit into the strategy; have the tools, capabilities and motivation to execute; and are empowered to innovate and change.

    Teradyne distibutes an annual online survey to its entire global employee base. The survey collects feedback on how well we are doing in important organizational topics, and provides us with a benchmark of where we stand today and where to focus our energies to remain a high-performing company.

    Teradyne Environmental Policy

    We conduct process design, assembly, marketing, repair and servicing of test equipment from new product conception through mature production.

    We recognize that business activities impact the environment. Teradyne is committed to managing activities that could potentially impact the environment in a responsible and effective manner.  
    We continually strive to improve our environmental performance, consistent with other business objectives, and regularly set documented objectives, and target and monitor progress in achieving them.

    In working towards minimizing environmental impacts associated with our activities, we:

    • at a minimum, seek to comply with applicable environmental regulations and standards.
    • support pollution prevention and minimization programs.
    • use materials and energy efficiently to conserve natural resources.
    • work to minimize, where feasible, emissions that contribute to climate change.
    • review environmental objectives and monitor performance.

    This policy is communicated to all employees and to those working on behalf of Teradyne and is made available to the public.

    Energy Management and Greenhouse Gases

    Teradyne continuously monitors risks and opportunity factors in the field of sustainability management, such as global policies and regulation trends that impact the business environment.  Part of this involves reducing our climate footprint. We continually assess the environmental impact of our operations. Primary areas of focus have been to reduce consumption of electricity, gas and water and to explore sustainability energy opportunities.     Environmental and Safety Management (ISO 14001)

    Teradyne has had a dedicated Environmental and Safety Management System (ESMS) since the early 1990s. This system has expanded over the years and contributed to our ability to easily transition to ISO 14001 certification at our U.S. headquarters in North Reading, Massachusetts as well as our facilities in Heredia, Costa Rica and Kumamoto, Japan. We maintain a documented ESMS at all of our offices. Our  ISO 14001 system serves as the framework for our sustainability initiatives.

    Building robots with local high school students. Walking to combat hunger in our community. Cycling to help cure childhood cancer. Reforesting to reduce mudslides in the Philippines.

    These are just a few examples of Teradyne employees doing the right thing in support of the communities where we live and work. We are a talented and energetic group and when it comes to volunteering, we recognize the need to support our neighbors both as individuals and as a company.
    Advancing technical education for future generations is a primary effort for us. We actively support middle and high school math and science education, as well as programs that challenge students to develop these skills.

    We appreciate the hard work of our employees helping to make the world a better place. To amplify that hard work, Teradyne matches the donations employees receive for participation in charitable fundraising walks, runs, cycling events and other outreach activities.

    Responsible Sourcing
    Teradyne recognizes the need for a strong responsible sourcing program. We work with our suppliers to ensure that our supply chain sources in an ethical manner. A key part of that is recognizing the potential adverse effects of sourcing tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold (3TG)from the conflict regions in Africa. Teradyne ensures all suppliers adhere to our supplier code of conduct, which requires responsible sourcing, and we work with our suppliers to track all 3TG used in our supply chain down to the smelter level.

    In addition to working with suppliers, Teradyne is a member of the Conflict Free Sourcing Initiative (CFSI) and works with the CFSI to verify that all smelters used in our supply chain do not source from mines that support armed conflict.     Protecting Human Rights
    Teradyne is committed to support and respect the protection of human rights and to ensure that our business partners and suppliers do the same. Teradyne's internal and supplier codes of conduct requires the fair treatment of workers and the prevention of any forms of child labor, human trafficking, forced labor, slavery, or any other form of non-freely chose employment.

    Freedom of Association
    In conformance with local law, Teradyne commits to respecting the right of all workers to form and join trade unions of their own choosing, to bargain collectively and to engage in peaceful assembly as well as respect the right of workers to refrain from such activities. Workers and their representatives are allowed to openly communicate and share ideas and concerns with management regarding working conditions and management practices without fear of discrimination, reprisal, intimidation or harassment.
